    The National Institute for Medical Assistant Advancement (NIMAA) delivers a national program to train Medical Assistants (MAs) to effectively participate in high-functioning, team-based primary care settings. NIMAA provides students an effective and low-cost educational program that introduces them to the exciting world of health and paves the way to a career in primary health care. NIMAA has two missions:

    • Improving the delivery of healthcare to disadvantaged populations by providing a better trained workforce;
    • Improving the income and career possibilities of entry level health staff.The team-based care model requires fundamental changes in the MA role. The MA becomes an essential member of the team responsible for the well-being of a group of patients. The NIMAA program meets these challenges by including didactics in collaborative and critical thinking skills combined with a simultaneous 240-hour onsite externship hosted in a modern primary care setting at a NIMAA clinic externship site. NIMAA establishes ongoing relationships with each clinic externship site to provide cohesive learning and teaching. NIMAA students who graduate are ready for jobs in first rank primary care clinical organizations. 


     

    SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

     

    A NIMAA Instructor is responsible for providing instruction to persons taking the NIMAA MA program. S/he is also responsible for supporting other NIMAA staff in suggesting improvements in the curriculum, and related instructional materials. In both cases, s/he reports directly to the Director of Education, Weitzman Institute, and works closely with other members of the NIMAA team and external parties.

     

    This is a 9-month position related to the 7-month NIMAA program. The Instructor begins work on August 1st, participating in intensive review of the didactic and other materials, and briefings with NIMAA staff. S/he participates in preceptor and skills coach training. S/he commences teaching online courses the second week of September, with graduation in mid-April. S/he participates in end-of-program debriefing sessions and then finishes work on April 30th.

     

     

    SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

     

    1. Learn the strategies and details of person-centered, team-based primary health care as practiced by high performing organizations, particularly as they relate to MA’s.
    2. Learn the online curriculum content for NIMAA and how best to engage students in learning it, managing the input from multiple sources, and then the evaluation of its effectiveness.
    3. Take responsibility for ensuring didactic instruction of students and participants, both by personally instructing and coordinating others to do so.
    4. Teach a minimum of one group of 20-25 students, and up to 3 groups at a time.
    5. Take responsibility for feedback to students and participants through commentary, postings, grading, and the like.
    6. Get to know each student personally; establish an effective instructional relationship with them.
    7. Take responsibility for the success of students in navigating the NIMAA program.
    8. Manage the operations of instruction, including postings to Moodle, scheduling, and record keeping.
    9. Ensure effective connection between the online program and in-clinic externship operations, especially the preceptors, and support for them.
    10. Provide staff support to other NIMAA team members and external parties working on these matters.
    11. Work closely and cooperatively with the NIMAA Instructional team and the broader NIMAA team as well.
    12. Report directly to the Director of Education, Weitzman Institute. Undertake assignments and set priorities at his/her direction.
    13. Support the Director of Education in the creation and implementation of a work plan for improving the curriculum content, getting commentary on it from students, participants, and externship parties. This will include filing detailed reports after each of the four terms on suggested improvements in didactics taught that term.
    14. Undertake other work to support NIMAA as requested by the Director of Education or by NIMAA’s CEO.

     

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

    The Instructor will have:

    1. An Associate’s degree or higher.
    2. At least three years of Medical Assistant practice in primary health care, preferably in a PCMH, team-based practice.
    3. At least three years of Medical Assistant instruction experience.
    4. A current national certification as a Medical Assistant, or a more senior medical license.
